Knowing your Main Door

If you are living in a public housing estate, you will need to be familiar with your main entrance door, especially when you are looking to purchase a new main door. This guide serves to help you understand what size is your main door, and whether you will need a fire rated main door.

What’s my main door size ?

For main door, there is two standard sizes available, a regular ‘3 x 7 feet’ and the larger ‘4 by 7 feet’. The larger size of main door will costs more as more materials are used for the door. You do not have to worry about having to measure your main door to find out the size. There is a simple way to work out the size, it is just by observing your current main door.

Look at your current main door. Do you observe your main door having 1 panel like a regular room door or it having made of out of 2 panels?

If you see that your main door only consists of a single panel resembling that of a normal room door, then your main door is single leaf. You will need to get a single leaf 3×7 feet main door.

On the other hand, if you observe your main door to have 2 panels consisting of one larger panel and another smaller panel at the opposite side, then you have a double leaf main door. You will need to get a double leaf 4×7 feet main door.

Do I need a fire rated main door ?

The new fire rated regulations makes it mandatory for some home flats to obtain a fire rated main door. A standard fire rated main door is fire resistant for up to half an hour. There is a simple way to tell if you need a fire rated main door. Look at your main door, if it is within 3 meters distance to the lift lobby, you will need a fire rated main door. Another way that you know for sure that you will need your main door to be fire rated is if your current main door is the nearest to the lift and staircase. The staircase is a vital escape route in case of any emergency or fire, therefore the fire rated main door near the staircase serves to buy valuable time in the case of a fire breakout.

If you are still unsure of the requirements, you can also email your town council to confirm if you need a fire rated main door. Our professionals will also help you verify if you require a fire rated main door during your on-site measurements.
